Matanataki and Harvard Tech for Social Good Collaborate on a Waste Collection Software Platform in Fiji

January 22, 2023

Matanataki and Harvard Tech 4 Social Good have collaborated to develop a waste collection platform, which will be used by waste collection companies in Matanataki’s pipeline, their corporate clients and the general public to schedule collection services.

The collaboration commenced in 2021 with a UX research and design project focused on designing a Waste Stream Dashboard and a Waste Pickup Scheduler, in response to local stakeholder surveying. The deliverable was user research, design reports and figma files, which were then used by the software development team in 2023 to create the platform.

The software team’s brief was to build an accessible, user-friendly digital platform comprising two aspects: a client facing app, which provides information about different waste streams that can be scheduled for collection, a booking system providing geo-locations and a status dashboard providing customers with an overview of transactions and their statuses. On the waste collection company-facing side the team developed a dashboard to show current and historic picks up and drop offs, types of waste and volumes for collection, and a feature to allocate drivers and send invoices to initiate payment.

Matanataki will launch the app with The Fertile Factory and Co in mid 2024, once the company commences operations. The Fertile Factory and Co is Matanataki’s second direct investment in Fiji and has received finance via the Global Fund for Coral Reef’s Blue Bridge which is run by UNCDF.
